Surfing looks easy when you’re watching the pros, but there are a lot of surf basics you need to know before you paddle out by yourself. The best way to start is usually a surf lesson. You can find a surf school in our comprehensive directory, or ask a surfer friend to take you out and give you some surf tips and guidance.

In case you don’t have a local expert to get you started, here is a quick list of how to surf tips and advice you should read before you hit the water.

First things first, before you start paddling out and shredding, you need to make sure you make two critical decisions:

Choose the right surfboard to learn to surf on.
Select the best area beach to learn to surf.
These choices will greatly affect your first surf experience. The best place to learn how to surf is at a flat sandy beach where there is plenty of room to find your own area in the water. You don’t want to learn in a crowded lineup of experienced surfers. For safety reasons, you also don’t want to learn to surf in a zone where children and families are casually swimming.

1 WAVE SELECTION

Different waves have different possibilities in riding them. The first step in having full control over your speed is understanding which waves will allow you to go fast and which don’t. Walled up waves produce faster sections while slow waves are usually flat and soft. To read a wave and to stay in the sweet spot takes time and practice in the water. Watching other people surf or watch clips on youtube can also help understand different waves and their speeding potential.

2 BOARD SELECTION

Another factor that has more to do with knowledge than your actual surfing is the selection of your board. Generally speaking the more foam a board has the faster it will glide. Different surfboard designs, tail shapes, concaves and rail types also affect the drive of the board.
Surfboards with less rocker (the curvature of the surfboard’s foam) generate more speed than curvier boards. A flatter board will work very well on smaller waves when there are no larger waves to help generate speed.

3 PUMPING & TRIMMING

PUMPING
Pumping describes the action of going up and down the wave. It usually happens on the steep section of the wave. The higher you are the more speed you will generate when going down. Once you are down decompress your legs and spring back up the wave. Repeat this a couple of times and you will be generating sufficient speed for your next turn or move.

TRIMMING
To trim the surfboard transfer weight between your toe side and heel side. This will pull you up and down the face of the wave and help you in maintaining and generating speed.

4 BOTTOM TURN

A good bottom turn is the basis of lots of surfing maneuvers. With a good bottom turn you can actually gain extra speed. If you find yourself losing speed or even stalling when you do a bottom turn, you probably came into the turn too hard, too square. You’ve lost all your momentum that you’ve gained from coming down the wave.
The key to maintaining your speed is to draw a wider arching line with your knees bend and staying low. If done perfectly you will actually be generating speed with your bottom turn.

5 CLEAR WAX

Be sure to scrape off any surf wax from the bottom of your board. The smoother your surfboard, the more fluid it will glide through the water.

6 CHANGE FINS

Different fin designs and fin set ups also have an effect on a surfboard’s speed. A twin-fin will offer more speed than the traditional thruster set up, although you will lose some control. Surfboard fins with a large sweep will generate more speed and rigid fins can also help you to go faster.

Other than surfing tips intermediate surfers we also have surfing tips for beginners. Be sure to check all our articles on surf technique. See you in the water !

Almost everyone has heard of surfing. Some folks may call it risky and unpredictable while others call it the most enticing and exhilarating activity. Surfing is a popular aquatic sport in which a sportsman rides the wave with or without a paddle board. This riding of the wave is known as surfing. Such ride-able waves are most commonly found in the open ocean but can also be seen in rivers, estuaries, lakes and tidal bores. Many water parks have also created artificial wave pools where you can surf without any fuss! For many people, surfing is a way of life. Surfers, or wave worshiper, have come up with numerous reasons to love surfing. People say surfing is just like flying. You catch a right wave and you are easily carried back to the shore! Learning to surf can be a long journey; from the rush of adrenaline when you first hit the wave with millions of butterflies in your stomach to that moment when you have perfected a wave and have begun to experiment with new maneuvers. The passionate sport definitely requires lots of patience, physical coordination and fearlessness. If you keep failing, don’t give up. Just get up, make up your mind and start again! For those of you who are new to the wavy world of surfing, the following tips will be quite helpful.

Be A Strong Swimmer

Swimming is the closest thing to surfing and to surf you require excellent swimming skills for your own safety and comfort. Before you begin riding the waves, you need to become a regular swimmer. Make a schedule and stick to it! Where do you swim; in pools, lakes or the ocean? If it is the former you will need to practice swimming in the sea first. Just like surfing, swimming is all about the right technique rather than strength. A good swimmer will have more flexibility and an understanding of the ocean, currents and tides.

Pre-surfing Lessons – Find a Good Instructor

Surfing is not easy at all and the videos are not enough to get you ready for the raging waves. There are numerous surf schools, camps and shops offering basic lessons on surfing. Joining a school or hiring a professional surfer will prove to be very advantageous.

The Surfboard

Practice the right way to lie, paddle, sit and stand on the surfboard.

Surfboards should float on the water with or without your weight on them. To keep your board in balance, create a reference point Top Surf Tips for Beginners 1where it would come to rest any time you lie on the board. Next time you are in the water, just put your chin on that point and you will find your surfboard in balance! Novices make two common mistakes – putting too much weight in the back that results in corking of the board or putting too weight in the front, called pearling, which causes nose digging of the board into the water. Avoid these two mistakes and you are good to catch a wave! Next comes paddling. The proper way of paddling is called a crawl stroke which means paddling with alternative arms. Never paddle with both arms simultaneously because it will only slow you down. Once you get a hang of paddling, learn to sit on the surfboard. You maybe wobbly and clumsy in the beginning, but with time it gets very easy. You only have to be determined and calm about it! Standing on the board is quite tricky but achievable nonetheless. Stand up slowly and keep your body low. Seen a sumo wrestler? Just assume that position! Another thing to keep in mind is your vision. If you look down, you are most likely to fall, so look up, not down!

Dress Up!

Water temperature and your surfing wardrobe go hand in hand. If the temperature varies you may need to plan a seasonal surf wear. A sleeveless vest, full-sleeved jacket, a neoprene or rubber wetsuit, a cushioned plastic helmet, and an ankle strap to secure you to the board are few of the things you will need.
What to Avoid and Other Things to Remember
Avoid a board coming between the waves and yourself.
Avoid getting too close to the other surfers. There should be at least 15 to 20 feet of distance.
Avoid surfing alone. Beginners should surf with a experienced surfers in start.
Have a safety nose guard to prevent damaging your nose from the impacts.
Wear a vest, a leash and a rash guard.
Last but not the least, have fun!

As with all photos, great light is key when it comes to your end result. For these particular kinds of edits, I encourage shooting in the early morning or during golden hour for deeper tones. Experiment with different times of day and remember shade is always on your side too!

1. Adjust little by little

I’ll never forget in Photoshop class before editing apps existed, I was instructed to edit in “onsies and twosies”, meaning watch closely and adjust little by little to start. This goes for any change you make: filters, contrast, saturation, curves, etc. For example, with every image I edit, I rarely go 100% intensity on any given filter. I think this gives off more of a custom look and will allow for more control as you make changes to the photo. For this example, I applied the Magic Hour filter at 10%, and then continued to add contrast, saturation, yellow, and purple tint at 10% over and over. Always feel free to keep reapplying any given tool if you feel like you want more of something. I finished this edit off with the coral color fog at the top of the image.

2. Contrast is key

Shifting contrast slightly at the beginning of any photo is a great adjustment to start with (after your filter) because it’s the main tool for achieving this particular look. Essentially, you’re upping the highlights and darkening the shadows. From there, you can see what the photo needs. Depending on the edit, I’ll go in with contrast as a final step as well just to deepen everything a bit more. The example above only has one filter applied (Candy Girl at 70%), and the contrast was bumped up by 30%.

3. Shifting tones with highlight, midtone, and shadow colors

I am truly obsessed with these tools! One reason being, it’s so customizable to virtually any photo. When it comes to reds, greens, and blues, you get to choose which color you want a little bit less or more of. Here’s an example of shifting midtone and shadow colors with blues and greens. This image has no filter, a tiny bit of contrast, and I bumped up the green midtone and shadow by about 50%. The other image has the same steps applied but using blues instead. This can dramatically change the look of the photo with just a couple quick steps.

There are other countries in the world that enjoy divinely inspired natural landscapes, but Costa Rica boasts a higher biodiversity than Europe and the United States combined. Its small size also means that travelling from cloud forest to coastline and from summit to savanna is quick, easy and a matter of course. Here are some of its most natural wonders:

1. Monteverde

This iconic cloud forest was first settled by a community of Quakers who sought to protect their invaluable watershed. Home to such rare fauna as the resplendent quetzal, which is the Maya bird of paradise, Monteverde is partly responsible for Costa Rica’s international fame as an ecotourism hot spot where you can be inspired about the possibilities of organic farming and alternative energy sources.

2. Manuel Antonio

One of the country’s original ecotourism destinations, Manuel Antonio practically put Costa Rica on the map for international jet-setters. While the secret has long been let out, capuchin monkeys bounding across a tropical beach remain an arresting sight, as are iguanas, howlers, sloths and squirrel monkeys, which may be the cutest fur balls you have ever seen.
Manuel Antonio is a coconut-filled paradise. The park’s clearly marked trail system winds through rainforest-backed tropical beaches and rocky headlands, and the views across the bay to the pristine outer islands are unforgettable.

3. Arenal

Arenal has been producing menacing ash columns, massive explosions and streamers of glowing molten rock almost daily since 1968. Miraculously, the volcano has retained its picture-perfect conical shape despite constant volcanic activity, though its slopes are now ashen instead of green. In the shadow of Arenal, there’s something for everybody including luxurious hotels, romantic restaurants and Tabacón Hot Springs, man’s recreation of the Garden of Eden.

4. Corcovado

Famously labeled by National Geographic as ‘the most biologically intense place on earth,’ Corcovado National Park is the last great original tract of tropical rainforest in Pacific Central America. The bastion of biological diversity is home to Costa Rica’s largest population of scarlet macaws, as well as countless other endangered species, including Baird’s tapir, the giant anteater and the world’s largest bird of prey, the harpy eagle. Corcovado’s amazing biodiversity has long attracted a devoted stream of visitors who descend from Bahía Drake and Puerto Jiménez to explore the remote location and spy on a wide array of wildlife.

5. Montezuma

A laid-back, budget beach town with a hippie vibe (locals call it ‘Montefuma’), beautiful beaches, a chill atmosphere and great restaurants. It’s the perfect base for exploring the southern part of the Península de Nicoya. Up until the late 1990s, a traffic jam in Montezuma was getting off your bike to shoo some cows off the road, Montezuma is still a charming village, and foreign travelers continue to be drawn here by the laid-back atmosphere, cheap hotels and sprawling beaches. And while nothing ever stays the same, Montezuma has managed to hang on to its tranquil appeal.

6. Jacó

There’s a loyal surfing contingent, resident North American expats and international developers who bill Jacó as the ultimate central Pacific destination and one of the country’s most rapidly developing cities. Truth be told, the surfing is excellent, the restaurants and bars are cosmopolitan, and a skyline of future high-rise apartments and luxury hotels is rapidly being constructed. While it couldn’t be classified as the ‘real’ Costa Rica, it is fun. There may be better surf spots and cleaner beaches, but its bar, restaurant and club scene is the best you will find along the entire Pacific coast.

7. Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

By day, lounge in a hammock, snorkel off uncrowded beaches and visit the remote indigenous territories of the Bribrí and Kéköldi. By night, dip into zesty Caribbean cooking and sway to reggaetón at open-air bars cooled by ocean breezes. Nearby, you’ll find rainforest fruit farms set to a soundtrack of cackling birds and croaking frogs. The villages of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca seem to have it all.

8. Tortuguero

Watch endangered sea turtles practice the millennia-old ritual of building a nest and laying their eggs on wild black-sand shores in this charming Caribbean jungle town. Tortuguero is more than just turtles; it’s thick with wildlife, and you will find sloths and howler monkeys in the treetops, tiny frogs and green iguanas scurrying among buttress roots, and mighty tarpon and endangered manatee swimming in the waters.

9. Dominical

A permanently chilled-out beach town where time slows down to a crawl, Dominical has a way of forestalling your future plans. But when the surf is crashing and the sun is blazing, few travelers seem to really care.

10. Llanos de Cortés

If you have time to visit only one waterfall in Costa Rica, make it Llanos de Cortés outside of Liberia just off the Pan-American Highway. One of the most dramatic waterfalls in Costa Rica, it cascades into a tranquil pond with a white sandy beach. Scramble behind the falls with your sweetie to reach romantic nooks veiled by curtains of water.

Though Costa Rica is known for many of its great tourism specialties, there’s one that should never be overlooked: surfing.

Few places in the world can offer travelers volcanoes towering up to 12,530 feet and a seemingly endless 700 miles of coastline on the Pacific and Caribbean like Costa Rica can. Costa Rica’s appeal is easy to understand:

  • Consistent surf year-round
  • Warm water
  • Easy access to thousands of breaks
  • Surf conditions from mild to mind-blowing
  • Surf camps and international tournaments
  • Affordable prices

Find out how to make the most of your surfing trip to Costa Rica with these tips.

Where to Surf

There are three main areas to surf: The Pacific North (Guanacaste-Nicoya), the Pacific South (Punta Arenas) and the Caribbean. There are also cool surf towns popping up in Jaco, Tamarindo and Puerto Viejo. The best waves occur in the rainy season (Northern Hemisphere ‘summer’) on the pacific side, and in the hot dry season (‘winter’) on the Caribbean – so you’ll always be able to find a good break.

Some of the beaches that are considered the safest:

  • Playas Rajada and Jobo near La Cruz
  • Bahía Junquillal Wildlife Refuge
  • Play Hermosa in northern Guanacaste
  • Plays del Coco
  • Sámara
  • Carillo
  • Bahía Ballena/Tambor
  • Beacheson the Golfo Dulce between Puerto Jimenez and Golfito
  • The third beach at Manuel Antonio
  • Little Dominicalito in Dominical
  • Uvita

These beaches that are known for riptides, so be careful or just avoid them altogether:

  • Espadilla at Manuel Antonio
  • Jacó
  • Dominical Beach

Watch for Riptides

They are responsible for 80% of the drowning in Costa Rica! Take a minute and visit this site to learn how to spot a riptide and what to do if you get caught in one.

Yes, There are Crocodiles
Some break points feed into river mouths where crocs tend to hang out so ask locals to find the safest, croc-free areas.

Rocky Ride
Most of the break points in Costa Rica have sand bottoms for your riding pleasure, though some areas still have pesky sea-floor rocks so wearing a wet suit isn’t a bad idea.

Watch the Weather
It is bound to change in an instant and you don’t want to be stuck way out when a big lightning storm comes through.

Mind the Surf Conditions!
Though consistent, the surf is not known to get abnormally big, and with a little research you can find an area that’s right for you.

Wear a Leash
Not only is it a law at many beaches, but wearing a leash is an important way to keep your board close to you and to keep it from becoming a hazard to other surfers.

Surfing Tips

But before you get that wet suit on always remember Surfing Etiquette:

The Caribbean
For those surfing on the Caribbean coast, keep in mind that the surfing season doesn’t last long, and most of the waves are produced by tropical storms off the Mexican coast. However, these storms produce some of the biggest waves in the country and should only be attempted by veteran riders.

Puerto Viejo also known as Salsa Brava, is home to some of Costa Rica’s biggest waves. A coral reef off the coast produces Hawaiian-style breaks that often carry over 20 surfers at a time. Located in the Limon province, Puerto Viejo is a vibrant seaside town with gorgeous waters and waves that tempt surfing pros.Westfalia extends south from Limon to Cahuita, offering breaks from the left and right. The best part of Westfalia is its reliability — it offers consistently good surf, but be forewarned of the riptides and jellyfish.

Portete beach is located very close to Limon, so you’ll have easy access to the small bay. It’s also a great spot for swimming and snorkeling if you’re the only surfer in the family. Portete is also close to Playa Bonita, where you can test out some bigger waves.

North Pacific Coast
The North Pacific Coast is encompassed by the Guanacaste Province and is the country’s most visited region. However, this area, home to some of the best and most easily accessible diving and surfing spots, is also one of Costa Rica’s least populated regions.

Playa Naranjo, more commonly known as Witch’s Rock, is one of the best breaks in the country, with some very strong offshore winds between December and March. There aren’t any resorts or hotels located here, but nearby Witch’s Rock Surf Camp is the perfect place to stay and learn. Instructors will teach you the basics and shuttle you and other newbies to the famous swells of Playa Naranjo. You can also camp out, but 4-wheel drive is a must and don’t forget a mosquito net.

Playa Grande provides consistent swells and breaks, making it one of the best overall surf spots in the country. It also offers a quieter spot than beaches like Playa Tamarindo and the beach’s north side is a great location for swimming, safe from the dozens of surfers tearing through the Costa Rican waters.

Playa Negra is a right-handed point break that the locals describe as epic. The waves are as powerful as they are reliable. For experienced surfers, the ride is best when the waves are breaking overhead, so head to Playa Negra on days when storms are kicking up some aggressive surf.

Central Pacific Coast
This region is the most easily accessible, just a short distance from San Jose. The resort towns offer a bit more nightlife than the other coasts, and the surf here is fantastic, making Central Pacific the place for a more lively vacation.

A beach that offers one of Costa Rica’s longest rides, Boca Barranca is a left break in front of a river mouth. You can ride these waves over half a mile when the conditions are right, so if you longboard, this is the beach for you. There’s great access to this beach, so it’s best to arrive early to avoid crowds.

Playa Escondida is an excellent point break for rights and lefts. For members of the beach club, the surf is accessible by land. If you’re just visiting, rent a boat from Playa Jaco or Playa Herradura. These waves are best surfed at high tide, so check tide times before hitting the surf.

Hermosa beach juts out into the Pacific Ocean, giving the waters there constant swell. The beach stretches for several miles, so you should be able to stake out your own territory. Some of the best breaks occur off a sandbar located in front of a large tree known as the Almendro. Ask a local to point out this primo spot.

South Pacific Coast
Unlike the Central Pacific Coast, the South Pacific is home to some of the largest last remaining stretches of Pacific Coastal rainforests. This is the coast surf if you’re only packing a wetsuit, a board and a sleeping bag — you’re surfing with Madre Nature.

Playa Dominical offers beautiful lush landscapes and waves for all skill levels. On the north end of the beach in front of the Baru River mouth, the surf is a little bigger and provides a challenge for skilled surfers.

Pavones is a left point that offers one of the longest rides in the world. This beach is located 8 hours from San Jose by car, but you’re welcome to pack your camping gear and stay a few nights. Rides here can last over three-quarters of a mile, considered one of the longest in the world. The surf here can be fickle, with the best surf occurring between April and November.

Cabo Matapalo is located directly across the bay from Pavones and catches the same ocean swells. Matapalo is much less surfed than Pavones, so if you’re looking to avoid crowds or just learning, this is an excellent beach for you. It’s drivable from Pavones, so make sure to hit both of these spots on your surfing tour of Costa Rica.
