Costa Rica is the land of Animals. Although the country takes up just .03% of the world’s surface area, 5% of the animal species in the world call Costa Rica home. Costa Rica makes up part a narrow land bridge that connects South and North America providing a necessary migratory path between the continents for thousands of different animal species. With over 25% of the countries land protected, Costa Rica is taking steps to ensure these animals will be around for generations to come. 10.) Keel Billed Toucan
Although many are familiar with this bird from a box of cereal, seeing one of these birds is a sight to behold. These Toucans live in holes in trees and travel in groups of 6 to 15 birds.
This wildcat is one of 5 cats found in the Americas all of which can be found in Costa Rica. The Jaguar is the largest of the cats and weighs between 100-350 pounds. It primarily resides in Central & South America. The Jaguar has the strongest bite of all felines.
8.) Blue Morpho Butterfly
The Blue Morpho’s wings measure between 5-8 inches across and are among the largest wings of all the butterflies in the world. Over 3000 different species of butterflies & moths live in Costa Rica.

Central America’s largest land Mammal, this endangered animal weighs between 330-880 pounds. When not foraging in the forest for leaves and fruits, Baird’s Tapir can be found relaxing in watering holes with just its head exposed.
6.) Green & Black Poison Dart Frog
This is a small frog with a big punch. These frogs secrete poison from its skin as a protection mechanism. Each of these frogs has enough venom to kill a human. The frogs name comes for the fact that the frogs secretions were used on the blowgun darts for hunting by natives many years ago.
The American Crocodile can be found from Florida south to the northern part of South America including Costa Rica. This endangered animal feeds primarily on fish and resides mostly in rivers and estuaries with a mix of salt and fresh water. Males can grow up to 20 feet in length and can weigh over 2000 pounds.
4.) Olive Ridley Turtle
This turtle gets its name from the olive color of its shell. They are best known for their breed phenomenon called an Arribada where thousands of turtles congregate just offshore and then come onto shore at once to breed and lay eggs on the beach in nests dug into the sand. Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world where Arribadas take place.

This monkey is considered to be the most intelligent of all monkey and lives in groups of about 20 monkeys called a Troop. The White Face Capuchin has a diet of mostly fruits and berries and because of their diet, the Capuchin is one of the most effective animals in the ecosystems at dispersing seeds.

This brightly colored bird is the largest bird in the parrot family. These birds typically live between 40-50 years in the wild and choose 1 mate for life. They use loud screeching chirps that can travel for long distances to communicate with and keep track of other Macaws in the jungle. These animals are the slowest moving mammal in the world. The sloth spends the majority of its time in the trees of the tropical jungle they call home. Sleeping accounts for 15-20 hours of each day for the sloth.
